Anacostia Tributary Trail System

The Anacostia Tributary Trail System, a link in the national shore-to-shore American Discovery Trail, provides miles of uninterrupted trails along the tributaries of the Anacostia River. The southernmost point of the trail is located at Colmar Manor Community Park, and trail spurs extend northeasterly and northwesterly from there along beautiful stream valley parkland. The trail system's continuous greenway traverses a variety of natural environments including woodlands, open fields, and wetlands.

Located at the headwaters of Maryland's largest freshwater swamp, the Zekiah, Cedarville State Forest invites exploration and adventure of its diverse natural, recreation and historic features. Rare carnivorous plants that catch and eat insects are uniquely found here. Hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians can enjoy 19 miles of trails, developed in the 1930s by a Civilian Conservation Corps comprised mostly of African Americans. Over 50 species of trees thrive in an actively managed 3,510-acre forest, demonstrating an array of beneficial and experimental forestry practices.

Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Tour

The Chesapeake Bay Critical Area Tour offers a unique opportunity to learn about the outstanding natural resources of the Bay here on the Patuxent River. The four-mile roadway is open daily for hiking and bicycling, and open Sundays for vehicles. The tour connects Jug Bay Natural Area with Merkle Wildlife Sanctuary and features educational displays, observation towers and a 1,000-foot long wooden bridge across the marsh. A self-guided tour brochure is available for visitors, and guided programs are available by reservation.

Henson Creek Trail

Located in the southern portion of Prince George's County, Henson Creek Trail is just over 6 miles long. Extending from Temple Hill Road southward to Oxon Hill Road, the trail goes through Henson Creek Neighborhood Park.

The Patuxent River Scenic Trail at Queen Anne is a 4-mile natural surface woodland trail for hiking, bicycling and horseback riding. This trail meanders along the river connecting this scenic greenway with its resources. Scenic overlooks, interpretive exhibits and rest stops complement the trail. Markers identify the trail and are color-coded for easy identification. Visitors are asked to follow proper trail etiquette and park in designated areas.

Rosaryville State Park is a 982-acre, day-use park with approximately 10 miles of trails ideal for birding, horseback riding, hiking and mountain biking. The trails wind through mixed hardwood forest and field with interesting views of forested wetlands. The park is also home to the historic Mount Airy Mansion, which provides an elegant setting available to the public for special occasions.

WB&A Trail
Washington, Baltimore & Annapolis Recreational Trail

The Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis (WB&A) Trail runs along the site of the former Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis Railroad. From 1908 through 1935, state-of-the-art electric commuter trains ran along this route through Bowie and Glenn Dale, carrying passengers between Washington, DC, and Baltimore.
The 5.6-mile trail from Route 450 in Glenn Dale, running northeasterly to the Patuxent River.
